Well VOIP is an acronym for voice over ip, and, what it means is that you can send your voice out over the internet. An example of VOIP would be a program like SKYPE or Yahoo Voice chat. Basically with these programs you are talking with people computer to computer. In other words if you have SKYPE and your friend has SKYPE you could talk to each other via computer. And if you both have video cams you can talk face to face.

A VOIP phone service works on the same principal and technology. What you need is a some sort of high speed internet connection such as DSL or Cable internet. You will probably need a router because you are basically creating a home network with one of your computer stations being your telephone. The router is plugged into your cable or DSL modem and your computer and phone adapter plugs into the router. You can get a router fairly cheap just about anywhere. Wal-Mart would be a good start. Some VOIP companies may not require you to have a router.

You will also need the adapter mentioned before. It plugs in to the router. This serves as phone jack for your phone. This adapter will be provided by the VOIP provider. You can then plug in any phone you want to use. You will be given a phone number. Now instead of computer to computer calls you will be able to call any land line and they’ll be able to call you at your new VOIP number.

VOIP is usually much cheaper than the phone company. I used Packet8 when it first launched and the cost was around $22 and some change after taxes. My service included unlimited local and long distance calling inside the U.S., call waiting and voice mail. International call prices depended on the country I was calling but was never expensive.

The draw back with some VOIP companies was there was no 911 emergency service. I don’t know about others but Packet8 had resolved this problem as early as 2005. You only had to register the address where you were using the system.

Another draw back – if your lose your internet connection you have no phone.

VOIP is a great way to go if you want cheaper phone service. The quality of calls was always crystal clear.

By now everyone has heard of internet phone services such as Vonage, Packet 8. These are example of VOIP phone companies. Also by now everyone knows that one of the benefits of VoIP is cheaper local and long distance calling. As a matter of fact VoIP is by far the cheapest telephone service you can acquire if you have high-speed Internet. Another benefit of VoIP is not a lot of fees and taxes attached to your phone bill. So when you get a local and long distance plan that cost $24.99 your bill wont be much more than that after taxes.

What is VoIP?

Voice over IP is the ability of an IP network to carry telephone voice signals as IP packets in compliance with International Telecommunications Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) specification H.323. VoIP enables a router to transmit telephone calls and faxes over the Internet with no loss in functionality, reliability, or voice quality.

Benefits of VoIP

Long distance service is a benefit of VoIP. There is not a separate charge for long distance calling with VoIP. Most of the time your local phone company doesn’t offer long distance calling without extra cost. With VoIP you usually get unlimited long distance calling with your service.

Along with the long distance benefit of VoIP you also get call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail, and a lot more. With VoIP you even have the benefit of virtual phone numbers. This means that some companies offer you the ability to add phone numbers for any area code you want. For instance, say most of your family lives in a different state than you do. You can set up a virtual phone number with their area code. This way you save them the cost of a long distance call. Also with some VoIP phone companies if you call someone who has the same service the call is free.

By far the biggest benefit of VoIP is the cost. Because VoIP works over the top of your High Speed Internet connection and not through regular telephone lines there is no high cost for phone service. It’s kind of like sending and email only it’s audio and you use your telephone. Your voice is converted to digital information and sent in small packets over the Internet, then converted back to audio on the receiver side. Because of this technology VoIP companies are able to offer you telephone service for a lot less than the local phone company.

Go ahead give it a try. You will be glad you have experienced the benefit of VoIP.

Voip Is A Great Service But..

Voice over IP is a great service but, there are some disadvantages. While voip provides a great alternative to the traditional local and long distance service offered by the phone company there are some things that voip cannot do yet. The disadvantages of voip are significant in some areas but the overall service is worth looking into if you have not done so yet.

No 911 with VOIP

The biggest disadvantage of voip is the slow solution to the problem with providing emergency service (E911). There is an effort to remedy this problem. Companies are able to provide 911 services in some areas but not others. Packet 8 is a company that is able to provide 911 service. As a matter of fact they were the first. This will not be a problem for very long though.

No Internet – No Internet Phone

Another disadvantage of VOIP is that if your Internet connection is lost you have no phone service. Unlike a conventional telephone voip is dependent upon your high-speed Internet connection. You basically have an in-house computer network system and your telephone is now a part of that network.

No Power – No Voip

Another weakness of VOIP is that it must have electricity to work. Many times when the power is out the telephone lines still work. This is not the case with Internet telephone. If the power goes out so does your Internet connection. The modem is electric. The router is electric. So, no power no phone.

Solution

One solution to the disadvantages of voip is to have a cell phone available for those rare times when you loose power or internet. And if you don’t want to have to pay for a monthly cellular plan a pre paid cell phone is an option you might look into. If you don’t use a cell phone that often this is a good way to go.

These are just a few of the things you have to keep in mind when you think about using voice over ip as a telephone service. It is a great savings and can reduce your phone bill by sometimes 75%. The service is worth it.

Internet phones or voip services are becoming more and more prevalent everyday.

Many of the more known companies such as Comcast, Bellsouth and others are now offering the service. Of course the service cost a lot more through big companies like these. Internet phones work over the top of your high-speed internet connection. It uses a technology known as voice over ip or voip. In essence it allows you to use your Internet connection to make phone calls with your regular telephone.

Why Is Internet Phone Cheaper?

Because Internet phone service is routed through your Internet connection you can bypass your telephone company’s service and the fcc fees and state taxes that cause your phone bill to be so high. Generally voip telephone service tends to be much cheaper than traditional phone service. For instance through a company like Packet 8 you could get unlimited local and long distance calling with all the extras like, voice mail, call waiting and call forwarding for under $30 per month (plus whatever you pay for your internet connection).

Popularity

Internet phones are quickly gaining popularity as indicated by more frequent telephone commercials advertising the product. There are many companies that offer voip service. Smaller unknown companies were the first to bring the service at a really affordable price. Now the larger fish will try to come in and take over the market. They have the power of million dollar ad campaigns. And still you will pay more with larger companies than you would with the smaller ones.

Internet phones and voip services are here to stay. You get the exact same service and product with smaller companies as you do with bigger companies for a lot less money. Your phone company has been sticking it to you for years. Why not give yourself and a smaller company the opportunity to put money into some other pockets for a change.

Vonage And Other Internet Phone Offers

Since the advent of the VOIP or interenet telephone Vonage has become the best known voice over IP phone service. Everything they say about there company in the TV ads is true. Everything they say about the phone company in the ad is also true. However, Vonage is not the only internet phone company out there.

More Internet Phone Companies

There are others such as Packet8, Lingo, and MyPhone Company to name a few. All offer a great service and awesome customer support. One of the early downfalls of an internet phone service was access to emergency 911. You would need to check with the company you choose to find out if the service is available. For certain Packet8 has remedied this problem in most of the country where they offer service.

VOIP Is Easy Setup and Use

Once you have signed up for you service you will receive a package by mail which contain all the items you need to set up your phone service. One thing you do need to have that the companies usually don’t provide is a router. You can get this at any store like Wal-mart or an electronics store. A router allows you to connect multiple computers to the internet. Your new phone adapter will also plug in just like a computer. Then you plug a regular telephone into the adapter and you are ready to go.

Heard of Voice Over IP? Maybe You’ve Heard The Term “Internet Phone.” What exactly is voice over ip?

Basically it is a way of converting analog signals (like your voice on the telephone) into digital signals and then transmitting them over the Internet and then converting them back to analog at the other end (another telephone). That is why it is sometime called Internet Phone. The best thing about voice over ip is that it has nothing to do with the phone company. Therefore Internet phone is a lot cheaper. How about less than $25 for unlimited local and long distance calling?

Changing The Nature Of Local Phone Sevice

Voice over ip will more than likely change the way phone companies offer telephone service. This is the only way they will avoid being blown out of the water. Internet phone is catching on very quickly. New companies offering the service are popping up every day it seems like. With unlimited local an long distance service available for less than $25 at some companies people are starting to take notice of the savings. Imagine being able to call your friends all over the country without worry of high phone bills.

Quality

The sound quality of voice over ip is absolutely beautiful because your voice is converted to a digital signal and then travels over your high speed Internet and converted back to analog with no degradation for a crystal clear sound. It is just like using a digital phone system. The biggest difference is the price of Internet phone service.

Lower Cost Than Than What the Phone Company Offers

You can get service with voice over ip carriers for a fraction of the cost of conventional telephone service. With a service package consisting of unlimited local and long distance calling, voice mail, call forwarding, and caller id your cost after tax can be as low as $22.50 per month.
