Smartphones are fun to have, but they are way more than needed. I am using my LG phone from Net10 to make calls and keep in contact with my kids. I used to be addicted to my blackberry, but after the outrageous bills i was paying, I decided that enough was enough, and cancelled my contract and switched to pay-as-you-go. If you average it out, it comes out to about $15 a month, which is less than any other plan. If you just use the phone on a NEED-base only, then the minutes will last and you will save a ton of money by using a prepaid plan instead of a contract plan. Just my 2cents... lol, 8 more and I can get myself a minute of talk time. It's hard to beat no contract and $.10 a minute.
