Who Had The First?
When Apple launched the iPhone back in 2007 they started a revolution of sorts. It was the first touchscreen technology offered on a cell phone to become a public sensation. The iphone raised the standard in mobile phone technology and a whole new cell phone revolution began.
LG Electronics actually introduced the first fully touchscreen phone with the LG Prada. And before the iPhone or the Prada, Blackberry was the industry standard when it comes to smart phones. With the ability to edit files using Microsoft Word and Power Point, and the ability to get online the blackberry was “The” smartphone for business people on the go. However that was not touch screen. The only thing close to a touch screen functionality before Prada and iPhone was the PDA ( Personal Digital Assistant ).
The PDA
You remember seeing people with those little gadgets in their hands poking them with a little stick? That was a PDA. On the PDA the screen was manipulated by using a stylus ( the little stick ) to enter data and activate programs you wanted to use. For you PDA and iPod users, how many times did you say to yourself, “wouldn’t it be great if this was a telephone too?”
As stated earlier when the iPhone came on the scene it wasn’t the first totally touchscreen unit. However, Apple ran an extremely effective campaign to popularize the phone before it ever came on the market. There were people standing in lines, camping out in front of stores before they opened, in order to be one of the first to get an iPhone. With it’s release Apple became a major player in the smart phone industry.
Since that time HTC has also joined the touchscreen club with the HTC Touch. Blackberry makes their contribution with “Storm.” Though Prada was first even they seemed to be answering the iPhone with the Prada phone. There are many many others. The touch screen phone is becoming common place and is more popular than ever.
Popular Features of the Smart Phone
- Full access to interenet browsing
- Chatting
- Improved Contact management with contact photos
- GPS maps locator and directions
- Digital camera
- Mp3 Player
- Video
- Calculators
These are just a few of the features you might find on your new smart phone. As I was researching this I even came across one company that said that smart phones could kill the desk top computer. I don’t think so.
I do believe the popularity of the device will continue to grow. People seem to have a need to be able to have access at any place at any time. The cooler the device looks and the more features they can cram into them the more popular they seem to become. And as competition increases between these phone companies you can expect to get even better deals than those available today.
